This guide is primarily set up for Indiana
State University staff and faculty who wish to set up a discussion list
here at ISU. All outside inquiries should be directed toward your
Internet provider.
A discussion list service can provide groups of people a method for
communicating. Discussion lists can be set up for a number of purposes.
For instance, you may wish to set up a discussion list for faculty in a
specific department to share curriculum changes or faculty on a specific
committee to work on reports. You can also set up a discussion list for
students in your classes.
Email messages sent to a discussion list will be delivered to all members of that list. In addition, you can set up discussion list archives on the web. These are handy when you want to keep a record of what messages have been sent, or you would like the messages to be available to people who are not members of the list. You may view some discussion list archives by visiting our discussion list archive page.
You may also control what is sent out on a discussion list by "moderating" it. You can moderate a list by having all mail messages sent to you before it is sent out to the rest of the list members.
You can set up a discussion list so that anyone can subscribe. You may also choose to be in control of who is subscribed to your list by adding people to the list when you set it up and adding other names to it as requested.
ISU faculty and staff may request a discussion list by filling out
this handy web form.
Once your discussion list is set up, please review the
Listproc
Instructions page for information on maintaining your list via the
web interface and email.
Q: What is a Discussion List?
A: A discussion list is more commonly referred to as a
'listserv'©, however 'listserv' © is a copyrighted product
name that was developed from the bitnet protocol/service ... It is
illegal to call our discussion lists 'listservs' in print due to the
copyright. At ISU we refer to 'listservs' as "discussion lists".
Q: What type of hardware is used for discussion lists?
A: Our discussion lists are on every server with end user
accounts.
Q: What kind of operating system is used?
A: ISU's discussion lists run on various Netware servers
Q: What discussion list software is used at ISU?
A: Listproc is the software that is used at ISU. The
software's homepage is located here:
http://www.listproc.net/
Q: Are messages automatically picked up by the server and
retransmitted, or is it done manually?
A: Either way: the default is automatic, we don't have any
that have asked to moderate the postings ... we have one that is not
public for subscription ... since it's for Presidential Scholars.
Q: How can I get Help with discussion list commands?
A: Send the word "help" in the body of a mail message to "listproc@lists.indstate.edu"
For a list of commands, you may also visit the
Managing and Using a ListProc list page.
Q: Do you have the ability to signoff or unsubscribe with
this discussion list software?
A: Yes, this is usually covered in the initial welcome
letter.
Q: Do you have the digest capability with this discussion
list software?
A: The documentation discusses it, but no one has asked to
have their discussion list set up this way yet.
