I. MISSION OF WABASH VALLEY CITIZEN EDUCATORS

Dear Professional Educators of the Wabash Valley:

"Welcome!" Supported by the Beta Lambda Chapter of the Phi Delta Kappa Educational Honor Society at Indiana State University, this 1998 Citizen Educators of the Wabash Valley Program enlists those with special interests, experiences, and backgrounds who wish to share their perspectives with students at school. "Citizen Educators" throughout our area are available to teachers and administrators for classroom presentations, field trips, and other unique learning experiences. Participation in this program is an indication of improving and enlarging the educational experiences of all students.

There are many wonderful opportunities for using this "Citizen Educator's Program" in most subject areas and grade-levels of the curriculum. Often, there is a significant lag between current information and textbook content, a gap that this program can fill. Inviting people from our community into the classroom is good for multiple reasons, especially when focusing attention to the building of civic competence and critical thinking skills.

The success of our program depends upon your support, participation, and hospitality! We hope that your school will feel free to use these speakers in a way which will be most effective for your students' education. As a matter of professional courtesy, please contact your "Citizen Educator" at least one week in advance unless otherwise specified. Make all of the necessary arrangements for your classroom visit by addressing the materials needed (such as VCR-TV monitor, extension wires, screens, presentation tables, etc.), time allocation, student questioning activities, "thank you" responses from your students, etc. Additionally, please inform your building principal about your plans to invite a 'Citizen Educator" since the necessary procedures for parking, signing the office's visitor's roster, and any other accommodations might be needed.

If you have any suggestions or nominations for new "Citizen Educators" to our program, please contact us at Phi Delta Kappa at your earliest convenience. We would enjoy talking with you about our new and exciting 1998 Wabash Valley Citizen Educators Program!

Respectfully, Beta Lambda Chapter, Phi Delta Kappa
