Expertise and Activity Statement
Professor Robert Ben-Zion Van Sickel (Ph.D. University of California, Santa Barbara, 1995) has previously taught at Purdue University Calumet, the University of California, and Sonoma State University.  Dr. Van Sickel's scholarly interests include Law and Society, Civil Rights and Liberties, and American Political Thought.  He is the author of Tabloid Justice: Criminal Justice in an Age of Media Frenzy (2007) and the Jurisprudence of Sandra Day O'Connor (1998), as well as a number of articles and papers analyzing various aspects of the Supreme Court, media law and politics, and American political and popular culture.  He is currently working on a book exploring the political thought of Eugene V. Debs.

Dr. Van Sickel is a member of the American Political Science Association, the Midwest Popular Culture Association, and the American Judicature Society, is a long-time member of the board of directors of the Eugene V. Debs Foundation, and serves as a board member of the ISU American Democracy Project.

At Indiana State University, Professor Van Sickel teaches courses such as Law and American Society (PSCI 419), the Judicial Process (PSCI 308), Civil Rights and Liberties (PSCI 418), Western Political Thought (PSCI 319), Mass Media and Politics (PSCI 400), Film and Politics (PSCI 400), and American Political Thought (PSCI 309).

When not teaching or writing at ISU, Dr. Van Sickel lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where he enjoys spending time with family, playing guitar, attending concerts, record collecting, vegetarian cooking and dining out, going to the movies, and rooting for the Chicago Cubs.
