Over the past decade, ISU’s Department of Theater as had more new works selected to the Kennedy Center / American College Theatre Festival than any other undergraduate program in the Midwest.
FUSION Dance
FUSION Dance Theater is a collaboration between dance and theater at
ISU. This exciting company produces shows with the department of theater that feature dance, poetry, puppets, and masks to engage it's audience on a magical journey through time and space. FUSION has also developed a performing arts after school program that works with middle school students in a local community center to develop shows that are performed at the center, in neighboring schools, and on the ISU campus. ISU theater and dance students conduct the program with a faculty member for class credit. Students get an opportunity for hands on experience in teaching theater as well as an opportunity to connect with the community.
Fat Girls Theatre
Fat Girls Theatre is a small, but hefty, division of the ISU Department of Theater. Founded as a response to the lack of roles for women “of size,” the company stages new works that put unconventionally sized women front and center in innovative and humorous ways.
New Play Festival
Studying everything from the Greek classics to the modern avant-garde, our students are encouraged to incorporate a wide range of theatrical styles into their writing to create their own powerful new visions for the American theater. Each year student plays are developed in playwriting classes and presented in our annual New Play Readings. From there several plays move forward to receive full staging in the popular New Play Festival.
