SHIRLEY GARVEY
Office Assistant III

A secretary at Indiana State University since 1978, Shirley has spent all of those years affiliated with the office of Public Affairs (formerly Communication Services, News Service and also Public Information) – initially as a senior secretary and now, as an Office Assistant III.

She is responsible for coordinating the dissemination of all news releases and press packets, updating media mailing lists and e-mail databases, handling all budget information and helping to supervise student employees and interns.

Prior to coming to ISU, she served three years with the United Way as a secretary, cashier and accountant (1969). More than seven years of her life were spent working with the National Council on Crime and Delinquency (this prepared her well to work with her colleagues in Public Affairs). She also previously worked as an office manager in several other locations, including California, Iowa, Missouri, Washington and Indiana.

Shirley remembers back when she first came to ISU – in the days before computers and the BANNER system. “We just used our pencils, typewriters and ledger books,” she said. “What progress we’ve made.”

While at ISU, Shirley has worked under five vice presidents of University Advancement and three presidents.

She lives in Terre Haute with her husband, Raymond, her daughter, Ginger, and grandsons Frank and Chris.
