A
native of Muncie, Indiana, Teresa Du Bois Exline literally grew up in the
newsroom of the Muncie Star where her father served as managing editor and
her mother worked as a linotype operator. She recalls being fascinated by
the flashing lights that came on when a “hot” story was coming over
the wire and can still recall the smells of the newsprint, ink and
chemicals. She knew from an early age that she wanted to follow in her
father’s footsteps.
In
1978, Exline was named a Storer Scholar. She used the full-tuition
scholarship to pursue a degree in journalism and political science from
Indiana University.
In
1982, she began her professional career with Shepard-Poorman
Communications Corporation in Indianapolis, serving as editor of a
national trade publication for the graphic arts industry and as a copy
writer for ad campaigns for several of the company’s clients.
After
her husband took a new job in Terre Haute in 1984, Exline joined the staff
of the Sullivan Daily Times as the news editor. She was named editor the
following year. While at the Times, she received numerous awards from the
Hoosier State Press Association for deadline reporting, feature writing,
editorial writing, best editorial page, best front page and best feature
section. She also received a national citation from the Associated Press
in 1986 for her contributions to the wire service.
In
1987, Exline was named coordinator of public affairs at Indiana State
University. She became the director of promotion and special events in
1989 and was appointed as director of Public Affairs in 1993. She was
named executive director earlier this year. Exline serves as the
university’s chief spokesperson and is responsible for overseeing a
myriad of public relations activities which are detailed in this report.
In 1998, she and Assistant Director of Public Affairs Maria Greninger and
IU’s Ellen Gullett received an award of distinction in medical education
public affairs from the Association of American Medical Colleges for the
launching of the BA/MD program.
Active
in numerous professional and civic organizations, Exline is currently
serving as the program chair for the Council for the Advancement and
Support of Education (CASE) District Five Conference, the largest
conference in the country for university fundraising, public relations and
alumni relations personnel.
She
also is very active in her church and coordinates its weekly soup kitchen
for the needy.
She
and her husband, Jim – a partner in Wabash Valley Capital Management –
live in Sullivan with their children, Jackie, 12; and Jessie, 5.
