Master of the Mbira performing Nov. 4

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Cosmas Magaya, internationally recognized master of the mbira, or thumb piano, will perform as part of the Indiana State University Visiting Artist Concert Series at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in the Recital Hall of the ISU Center for Performing and Fine Arts, at Seventh and Chestnut streets.

Magaya has toured internationally with mbira ensembles Mhuri yekwa Rwizi and Zimbabwe Group Leaders Mbira Ensemble. His performances have also been featured on a number of critically-acclaimed compact discs. He has been invited to teach master classes at universities throughout the United States and Canada.

Born in Zimbabwe, Magaya grew up in a rural area. He became interested in the mbira at the age of 8 and begged his older cousin to teach him how to play. Magaya’s wish was ignored. Instead, he “borrowed” his cousin’s mbira at every opportunity and taught himself how to play. After secretly practicing for several months, Magaya surprised his family by playing the mbira. His cousin, who had ignored his pleas earlier, began to teach him more songs. Magaya and his cousin were frequently hired to play for religious ceremonies.

Admission is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the music department concert hotline at (812) 237-2773 or visit the department's web site at http://www.indstate.edu/music
