Historic Treasure of the Week - January 1, 1995

For those of us who love to read, this week’s historical treasure would have made a fine gift for Christmas, Hanukkah or even a birthday. We all know that we should not turn down the page’s corner to mark the spot where we left off, but many people do.

A bookmark can come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and materials, but this bookmark is unique. It is made from a six-inch piece of mother-of-pearl. Ornate silver crown decorates the top and holds a finely twisted silk string and tassel. To add to its beauty, two daisies have been painted on it.

It is not known how old this bookmark is or who donated it to the museum, but my imagination has run wild ever since I found it on the parlor table under the large paintings of Mr. and Mrs. Fairbanks.

Because it is not a "personal" item, it would have been a proper gift from a suitor to show his love. Was it a living anniversary gift for a wife or Christmas gift for mother or grandmother? Maybe it was a gift for a graduation, a sweet daughter or granddaughter, a kind aunt, or dear friend. Or, it might have been something the owner bought for him/herself. We don’t know, but it is fun to use your imagination.

The museum is closed for the month of January for its annual cleaning, but when it opens again in February, come in and see the exhibits. Enjoy the artifacts and use your imagination.

The Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, 1411 S. Sixth St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
