Trunk survived rigors of rough

The summer of 1851 brought high tensions and great expectations.

San Francisco was buzzing with activity readying itself for this historical day. In hours, the journey would begin.

Brand new at 37 inches long and 23 inches tall and my iron belly ready, I knew I was strong enough to survive whatever the rough country terrain decided to throw at me.

From top to bottom, my metal hinges and clasp would protect the precious cargo soon to be stored neatly inside. My generous leather side handles provide the practical assurance of a good, steady grip.

If I’m lost on the way, my name is spelled clearly on my front and my numbers will identify me and securely get me to my destination.

Semi-monthly, the faithful messengers of this undertaking of the energetic Wells Fargo Atlantic and Packing Express will brave the cross country wilderness to forward gold dust, bullion, specie, packages, parcels and freight--including mail from loved ones--in a timely, safe and dry manner. The passages to and from New York can get rough, but rest assured, this trunk will get your "treasure express" home. The trunk is displayed at the museum.

The Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, 1411 S. Sixth St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
