Lawn party kicks off exhibit

"Company’s Coming," and we hope that includes you!

The featured turn-of-the-century dress of silk, decorated with French ribbon, is part of a special display that opens today in the Historical Museum. This very special exhibit, "Company’s Coming," will showcase some of the beautiful clothing, linens, china, silver and glassware in the museum collection.

Entertaining was an important part of Victorian life. The proper attire for each occasion was carefully attended to and when company was coming, all the best china, silver and linens were used.

Because "Company’s Coming," in honor of the opening we will host an old-fashioned Victorian lawn party in the yard of the museum. There will be refreshments, croquet, vintage bicycles and a very special first-time event for those attending. We will present a vintage fashion show featuring items from our extensive collection of clothing.

Because of the unique nature of the afternoon’s events, there will be a $10 fee per person. After today, the exhibit will be open to the general public free of charge.

While attending the lawn party, you will want to browse through out summer kitchen, the little yellow brick building in the back of the museum that once served as the kitchen for the Sage family. It will be filled with specially selected gift items.

Plan to join us for a step back to the quiet elegance of another time and spend a summer afternoon enjoying the beautiful items from our Victorian collection.

The Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, 1411 S. Sixth St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
