If a quilter lacks the time and funds to take a long trip abroad, she can always stitch a quilt in the "Trip Around the World" pattern while she dreams of faraway lands.

The Historical Treasure of the Week is a colorful cotton quilt made in this pattern. It is constructed entirely of one-inch squares set together on the diagonal. The color sequence of the rows, beginning with yellow, is repeated four times. It has a light-weight cotton lining and the quilter placed her stitches exactly on the line of the square pieces, so the underside of the yellow backing shows complete quilting in the one-inch squares.

Other quilt pattern very similar to this one, constructed entirely of small squares, which would use up many small scraps of fabrics, have been called "Sunshine and Shadow" and "Grandmother's Dream."

Helen E. Moore presented this quilt to the Vigo County Historical Society. It was created by her sister-in-law Lyn Moore about 1910.

The "Trip Around the World" quilt is on display in the north room of the Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, 1411 South Sixth Street. Open hours are 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday through Friday.
