Posters supported war effort

In 1941, the jolly old fellow in the World War II era poster is asking everyone to do their part to support the war effort by giving Defense Bonds and Stamps as holiday gifts.

The Government Printing office published and distributed the poster pictures as a reminder to "give a share in America." There are several other posters with holiday themes on display at the museum as it celebrates "Home for the Holidays--1945," a final tribute to the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II.

On Saturday the museum’s annual holiday children’s program will feature a "Winter Woodland Picnic" with stories, refreshments and a visit from some woodland friends. Reservations are required.

Dec. 10 will feature an open house from 4 to 8 p.m. The main floor of the museum will become a U.S.O. lounge as it would have been when it served as a meeting place for the returning troops and their families as they celebrated the wonderful holiday in 1945.

Plan to "Come Home for the Holidays" and visit the museum in December.

Enjoy all of the 1940s exhibits, the beautiful holiday decorations and the gift shop, which is featuring the book "On the Home Front in Vigo County--194101945," as well as many other gift items.

The Historical Museum of the Wabash Valley, 1411 S. Sixth St., is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
